THE FASHION industry is not usually known for its commitment and concern for humanitarian causes. They're known for being into fashion.
BUT THE WASHINGTON organization Fashion Fights Poverty (www.fashionfightspoverty.org) is doing its best to change all that. They held their fifth annual benefit fashion show on Friday, Sept. 25 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., to raise funds to support projects that create income-generating and micro-financing opportunities for artisans in developing countries, as well as for local youth programs.
AMONG THE participating companies was the Swedish jeans company, Nudie Jeans Co. (www.nudiejeans.com), based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The other designers included MIRZA MPÉRIAL, Aidah Collection, RenéeQ Bespoke, René Geneva Designs and Studio D-Maxsi.
MODEL, activist and host of the Discovery Network's Planet Green Summer Rayne Oakes and WTTG Fox 5 News Anchor Will Thomas hosted the event.
NUDIE JEANS was founded by Joakim Levin and Maria Erixon in 2001, and the company's current CEO Palle Stenberg, is a friend of Levin from Alingsås, just outside Gothenburg. The company describes itself as "a true jeans brand. We are not looking for the short-term trends. The inspiration is far from glamour and catwalks. The collection is tight, like a rock band, reflecting the feeling of everyday life...Nudie will stay true to jeans and all about jeans." Nudie Jeans are available at Barneys, Bloomingdales and other fine stores in the U.S., and dozens of upscale stores in Gothenburg, Stockholm and other Swedish communities.
