Swedish Washington-based artist Anna U. Davis
SWEDISH artist – and Party Crashers artist – Anna U. Davis (www.frocasians.com) has been creating a large painting from start to finish at the WIP Gallery in Artisphere (www.artisphere.com) in Arlington, Va., the last few weeks. Visitors have been able to experience the artistic process first hand while observing the artist while she is at work.
Anna U. Davis explains her work in her statement:
“In my drawing series ‘The Dance before the Kill,’ I continue my investigation of contemporary feminist concerns, this time giving form to the sexually charged hostilities that pervade both gender and race. In this series I adapt the paso doble as a metaphor to evaluate the fluidity of women’s role in relation to the aggressive, prideful posturing that typically characterizes paternal authority. I have in these drawings transformed my gray frocasians figures (an amalgam of the terms Afro and Caucasian) of my mixed media paintings into starkly black and white illustrations of entangled bodies. The Frocasians symbolize my utopist aim to transcend identity politics. The distinct, flamboyant clothing and histrionic facial expression of each character evoke the dance of the bull fight as these attributes increase the dramatic tension between sexes.”
