“WE HAVE ARRANGED the SWEA New Jersey Christmas Fair for 27 years in the same location in Upper Montclair, and usually we have about 850 visitors,” says events manager Madeleine Hershberger, who handles public relations for the fair and is also responsible for its kitchen. The New Jersey chapter of the Swedish Women’s Educational Organization, SWEA, will hold its traditional Christmas Bazaar in the Commonwealth Club at 26 Northview Ave., in Upper Montclair, N.J., on Sunday, Nov. 18, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

THIS PICTURESQUE event, with SWEA members in attendance wearing traditional costumes, will present two Santa Lucia processions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with children and teenagers singing Christmas hymns and songs. The 11 a.m. pageant will be with SWEA members’ children, and the procession at 2 p.m. is arranged by Swedish School of New Jersey, located in Princeton, Basking Ridge and Ridgewood. Additionally the fair will feature handmade holiday decorations, linens, rag rugs, books and wooden items, as well as a raffle and a tombola with many prizes, and activities for children, such as the Swedish “fishpond,” where the young children can fish for prizes. The fishpond will be overseen by teenagers. Anita Rhodes has had the main responsibility for this Christmas Fair for many years.

THE BAZAAR’S caf? which is managed by Ulla Jenkins, will be serving traditional open-faced sandwiches and waffles made by the kitchen, as well as hot dogs, pastries and beverages. The food shop will offer Swedish delicacies such as herring, cheese, breads, homemade cookies and cakes.

“ARTIST Yvonne Rodrigues will be selling her artwork with Swedish motifs, and at the information table in the entry hall there will be two SWEA products for sale — ‘Swedish Taste,’ a book, put together with the New Jersey members best Swedish recipes, and the popular yellow luggage strap with the name ‘SWEA’ in blue,” says Madeleine Hershberger.
