SWEDISH New York-based Chef Marcus Samuelsson has been seen a lot in the American media lately. In the Sunday's "What I Wore" - with the title "First Food, Then Sneakers" - he tells The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/27/fashion/27WHATIWORE.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=marcus%20samuelsson&st=cse) readers about what he actually wore this last week.
LAST NIGHT, March 29, President Obama held his first big 2012 campaign fund-raising event for the Democratic National Committee at Samuelsson's new restaurant Red Rooster Harlem (www.redroosterharlem.com). According to The Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2011/03/29/obama-visits-n-y-for-1-5-million-haul/?KEYWORDS=red+rooster+harlem) the president is "making nice" with Wall Street, after the Wall Street community suffered from criticism by Democrats in Congress and even the president over the last couple years. Wall Street was taken to task about the behavior of the financial industry, which helped to create "The Great Recession."
AND NEXT week, on Wednesday, April 6, Samuelsson will visit House of Sweden in Washington, D.C. for "FOOD: Talk & Book Signing with Chef Marcus Samuelsson" (www.swedenabroad.com/washington). He will talk about his new book "New American Table."

New York-based chef Marcus Samuelsson grew up in Sävedalen, Gothenburg, Sweden.
OVER THE YEARS, the Swedish New York-based chef Marcus Samuelsson (www.marcussamuelsson.com) has earned much acclaim in the United States. Known for his work at the Scandinavian restaurant Aquavit in New York, he recently opened Red Rooster (www.redroosterharlem.com) in Harlem at 310 Lenox Ave. He says that the menu at Red Rooster "reflects on the roots of American cuisine while celebrating local farmers and artisanal food makers." According to his Web site, Samuelsson, who is a resident of Harlem, has long wanted to bring a restaurant to that vibrant community.
WHILE OPENING a new restaurant, he has also found time to publish a cook-book "New American Table," assisted at a state dinner at the White House, and win Bravo's series Top Chef Masters in 2010 where he competed with about 20 world-renowned chefs.
ON THURSDAY afternoon he discussed food with Dylan Ratigan on Ratigan's MSNBC show (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/42016522#42016522). Marcus Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia and grew up in Sävedalen, a suburban area of Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast.

FOR MANY travelers the Swedish capital is synonymous with the world famous author Stieg Larsson and his Millennium trilogy. Maybe Larsson is the most well-known Swede in the world right now - or ever. Even tours with visits to the Södermalm neighborhoods, south of the Old Town, where he lived and worked, are arranged and are covered in the international press. BUT STOCKHOLM - the sometimes gloomy but beautiful city situated in the outskirts of the European continent - has a lot more to offer. This fabulous food market, with an extraordinary selection, is always worth a visit, not the least for its seafood. AFTER RETURNING to Sweden from his job as the former chef at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C., Martin Johansson, together with colleague Mikael Ingeltun, started a cupcake business -- Cupcake STHLM (http://www.cupcakesthlm.se) - in the Swedish capital.

INSPIRED BY the American trend, they opened this store with only cupcakes a few months ago, and the locals can taste their creations while listen to American Jazz. "It would be great to see all my old friends from Washington and the U.S. over the holidays, and we welcome them to stop by and enjoy the delights of our new cupcake bakery," says owner Martin Johansson.

Former Washington chef Martin Johansson starts Cupcake business in Stockholm

MARTIN JOHANSSON - known by many in Washington as the excellent former chef at the Embassy of Sweden - has returned to his native country and started a cupcake business in the Swedish capital. Many guests were fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy Martin's delicacies and creative dishes at the Ambassador's residence as well as at the House of Sweden and the Embassy.
DURING HIS time in Washington Martin Johansson also helped famed Swedish New York-based chef Marcus Samuelsson prepare President Obama's state dinner at the White House for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last November.
THE SWEDISH daily Dagens Nyheter told about Martin's new career in an article in the paper's Sunday edition, November 21 (http://www.dn.se/mat-dryck/reportage/cupcakes-1.1209763).

Catalonian Restaurant Can Roquet - charming with exquisite and inventive cuisine

RESTAURANT CAN ROQUET is one of many excellent restaurants on the Costa Brava in Spain. The most famous restaurant in the region is, of course, world-famous El Bullí, situated near the town Roses, about an hour and a half further north on the coast. Can Roquet is located in the charming and picturesque medieval village of Romanyà de la Selva, near the old church and Plaça de l'Esglèsia, close to Cristina d'Aro in the Girona province and about an hour north of Barcelona.
DURING A RECENT VISIT, it was obvious that the place is as good as last time we visited it about two years ago. Owners Ken and Donald, both Belgians, prepare dishes that are exquisite and impeccably presented. This charming and original atmosphere with candles everywhere, is the perfect backdrop to the fabulous and inventive dishes, consisting of a wide range of local products. Adding to the delightful meal are the two small appetizer dishes that are served before any ordered appetizer and the main course. This time we were served a white gazpacho, made of almonds, with garlic, and sherry foam, and a shrimp in a glass with leaf mint, filo pastry and sweet and sour sauce. Both were extraordinary! Honest Tea Aficionado Barack Obama

THERE HAS LATELY been so much media coverage on President Barack Obama's preference for the bottled tea called "Honest Tea" that I decided I had to try it out. My tea consumption usually only extends to brewed Earl Grey, English Breakfast Tea or even everyday Lipton tea. I am not particularly fond of herbal teas. They just don't taste very much. They're kind of bland, I think.
BUT THIS TIME I decided to jump on the bandwagon, and find out what all the hoopla is about. According to reports, Obama once favored Honest Tea's Community Green flavor, but now he likes Green Dragon and the caffeine-free Black Forest Berry. I went to my favorite grocery store in Washington, the organic megatemple Whole Foods Market (where you wouldn't dream of finding any food that wasn't politically correct, or less than hip), and bought one bottle of Green Dragon and one bottle of Black Forest Berry. Of the two, I must say that I clearly favor Black Forest Berry, with an appealing taste of blackberry and raspberry. I also like that the both teas were not sweet at all. The label says they have a touch of organic (of course) cane sugar in them.
HONEST TEA IS produced by a Bethesda, Maryland-based company that is committed to social responsibility and whose teas are USDA Organic Certified and Fair Trade Certified. Besides being very politically correct, President Obama likes their teas and, best of all, their teas are delicious -- which are all very good reasons to get some more Honest Tea.

Den svenske stjärnkocken Marcus Samuelsson, från Göteborg, besökte i februari staden och signerade sin nyutkomna bok på NK -- Africa on my mind - om den afrikanska kokkonsten. Han hann också med en TV-inspelning för TV4 i Fiskekyrkan. Samuelsson kanske är allra mest känd för sin prisbelönta lyxkrog Aquavit i New York, staden där han är bosatt.

Ben's Chili Bowl Attracts the Fancy Set and Guys from the Neighborhood

President-elect Barack Obama's Friday visit to Ben's Chili Bowl was covered in The Washington Post and media nationwide.
BEN'S Chili Bowl, a longtime neighborhood institution in the middle of the U Street neighborhood, got a presidential visit on Friday, when President-elect Barack Obama and Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty visited the place and posed for pictures before having lunch.
BEN'S HAS been at its location on U Street so long that it has seen the neighborhood go up and then down and then way down and then back up again. The food is simple, with the quintessentially D.C. half-smoke hot dog with chili as the centerpiece on the menu.
WHAT USED TO BE a black neighborhood hangout now has white women in fur coats and Louis Vuitton bags waiting in line to get a chili half-smoke to go while their fancy cars wait at the curb. Founded and owned by Ben and Virginia Ali, the restaurant is celebrating its 50th anniversary. They even have a book out with lots of pictures of the many famous and not-so-famous people who have stop by the famous eatery. Among the famous, comedian Bill Cosby is perhaps best known as a longtime patron of Ben's.

THERE ARE NOT many places in the Washington area for the person who longs for a Swedish Pytt i Panna or a Polish Kielbasa or a Romanian beer - but Domku Bar & Café is one of those rare places. A restaurant with Scandinavian & Slavic comfort food, situated in the Petworth neighborhood just off Georgia Avenue at 821 Upshur Street (just four blocks from the Petworth/Georgia Ave. Metro stop), Domku is a refreshing change of pace.
