Big Sur, California
BIG SUR is located along the spectacular Scenic Highway 1 in California, approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. The name was derived from the unexplored wilderness along the coast south of Monterey - "el paĆs grande del sur."
Big Sur, California
BIG SUR REFERS to the 90-mile stretch of rugged and beautiful coastline between Carmel to the north and San Simeon/Hearst Castle to the south. In 1937 the highway was completed after 18 years of work, and has since been declared California's first Scenic Highway. It was not until the early 50's that electricity came to Big Sur, and it still it doesn't extend to the more remote areas.
The proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides for a temperate climate, with mild winters and rainy days with periods of bright sunshine.
